Koenigsegg Jesko

Fortnight of 2/22-3/8

Koenigsegg Jesko:

The Hypercar of the future

This week marked the start of the famous Geneva Auto Show, where automakers from the entire world come together to show off their new technology. Many of these automakers use this autoshow as an opportunity to reveal their new cars. The Swedish car company, Koenigsegg, has taken the opportunity to reveal their newest "Megacar" at this show.

The Koenigsegg Jesko, named after the father of Koenigsegg's founder, is Koenigsegg's new addition to their record-breaking collection of cars. With every car that Koenigsegg has released, their goal in mind is to be the first or take the spot of number one. This tradition dates back to the beginning of the century and still continues today, with their most recent car, the Agera RS breaking the record for the fastest production car in the world just two years ago. The Jesko takes all this to a new level, promising pioneering in auto engineering and an opening to innovation

Engine

The Koenigsegg Jesko includes a tweaked Agera engine, a V8 twin-turbocharged engine that has the capability of reaching 1600 Horsepower (on E85). To put it into perspective, the engine will be about four times more powerful than that of a small aircraft. The engine is also crafted very carefully to ensure that its weight is well below average. And just to make sure the car can go even faster, there are 3 fuel injectors per cylinder (a v6 only has 1 per cylinder) and a large air intake and injection system. The car has the capability of reaching 8500 RPM. Additionally, the transmission is a new piece of technology known as a Light Speed Transmission which allows a driver to have almost no lag when shifting between gears, whether it be a large or small jump.

Design

With any hypercar, or "megacar," design is an important aspect, for safety, performance, and of course looks. The Koenigsegg Jesko has a fresh wing, splitter, and diffuser, all helping minimize the amount of drag the car experiences. The windshield is a wraparound airplane style window, allowing the driver to have maximized views of their surroundings. Hydraulic systems open doors and other compartments, so the driver can enter the car with the push of one button. The interior is spotted with materials such as alcantra, leather, and carbon fiber. The electronically operated seats are extremely lightweight. Their position and many other aspects of the cabin can be controlled from the touchscreen found in the center console of the cockpit. There are even touchscreens on the smart steering wheel, giving the driver full control of the car. For convenience, a backup camera and bird's eye view parking assist are included.

Conclusion

The Koenigsegg Jesko sets itself apart from all competition. It pushes and breaks through the boundaries of automotive innovation. It strives to meet and surpass the goals of its creaters and the consumers. This concept car will mark a new era in automotive technology that does not only apply to racecars, or hypercars, but also to the vehicle of an average consumer. So, if you have an extra three million dollars laying around, the Koenigsegg Jesko might be the thing for you!

24 Hours of Le Mans

Fortnight of 2/1-2/15

24 Hours of Le Mans

Le Mans is one of the most famous sports car races in the world. This endurance race, that lasts 24 hours, is the ultimate test for both driver and man. Created in 1923, this race was designed as a test for automakers to prove that their cars could not only go fast and perform well, but also last long. This race has pushed innovation into fuel efficiency, aerodynamics, safety, as well as many other features of the automobile.

History

Le Mans, the race that takes place in France near the town of Le Mans is the oldest endurance race in the world. Running since 1923, the race was built on mostly public roads where racers tried to cover the most amount of distance possible in 24 hours. The race took place almost every year (except during world war II) with faster, more efficient and overall better cars coming back each year. Big names that have taken victories over the years include Porsche, Bugatti, and Alfa Romeo. In the earlier years of the race, there were no rules on how many drivers had to participate per team. In fact, some teams only had one driver race for 24 hours to cut out the time required for changing drivers! But, in recent years, it has become required for at least three drivers per team to participate per team. The race has seen many changes and still continues to this day.

Interesting Facts about Le Mans

With its age and conditions, all kinds of things have taken place during Le Mans. With every auto race, there are accidents, and Le Mans is notorious for them. There have been many fatal accidents that have taken place at Le Mans, including one that killed 80 spectators and a driver. This goes to show the horrific reality of speed and what it can do if not handled properly. Sometimes, cars can be seen hurtling down sections of the track at over 230 miles per hour, a potential safety hazard to the driver and spectators.
Le Mans has also been featured in lots of media due to its fame. Le Mans, a film by Steve McQueen is a very accurate depiction of the race, and the tough conditions drivers have to face when racing. Le Mans has also been featured in many racing games. Some of these video games let gamers participate in a full 24 hour replication of the race!

2019 Le Mans

The 2019 Le Mans race will take place starting from the morning of June 15 to the morning of June 16. According to the official Le Mans race website, the cheapest tickets available right now start at 225 euros. Visitors have the option to brave the entire 24 hours in a grandstand, stay off track for a quiet nights sleep and visit the race during the day, or sleep and camp on the infield of the track. Fortnight of 1/17-2/1

Watkins Glen, NY

Recently, on a road trip to Toronto, I had the privilege to stop and visit Watkins Glen, a small village in upstate New York. Watkins Glen sits at the southern end of Seneca Lake, one of the famous finger lakes of New York. Watkins Glen has its own State park and is surrounded by many natural recreation areas. Nearby Watkins Glen, one can also find the Watkins Glen International Raceway. This article will provide an overview of the Watkins Glen State Park and the Watkins Glen International Raceway, two of the most popular tourist destinations in this New York Village

Watkins Glen State Park

The Watkins Glen State Park is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The movement of glaciers created a unique gorge which has been further eroded by the steep drop of a stream. This stream, which drops 400 feet throughout the canyon, has created 200 feet walls on this sides of the gorge. Visitors can choose to navigate inside the gorge, with the opportunity to view 19 different waterfalls, or they can walk on ridge trails to overlook the gorge in its entirety. The three trails all connect to New York's Finger Lakes Trail, an 800 mile collection of trails that run within the New York State.

Watkins Glen International

Watkins Glen International is a famous racetrack located just Southeast of the Watkins Glen Village. This track has lots of history behind its current position, and it holds a major position in the Motorsports community. Founded in 1948 by a law student, the speedway was home to the Formula 1 American Grand Prix for 20 years. Famous names such as Mario Andretti and Bruce Mclaren have raced and won on this track, adding to its fame. It was acquired by the International Speedway Corporation and is home to many unique races. Visitors can view the SCCA majors super tour, an event where the best amateur race drivers compete in high stakes and high adrenaline racing. Visitors can also watch the "six hours at the Glen" race, which is a classic that has been taking place at this raceway since its opening in 1948. You can even take your own car around this racetrack during most days of the year!

Two of Colorado's most notable Mountains

Fortnight of 1/4-1/18

Maroon Bells:

Attractive but Dangerous

One of Colorado's most breathtaking sights are the twin peaks known as the Maroon Bells. These two mountains, stretching fourteen thousand feet above sea level are located just outside of Aspen, Colorado, and are the most photographed location in Colorado. But, as thousands of unsuspecting tourists flock these mountains each year, unbeknownst of the danger that lies within its climb.

The Maroon bells are formed with layers of mudstone, which gives the mountains their characteristic maroon color. At the right time of day, photographers and viewers alike can find the mountains reflecting in the nearby Maroon Lake, creating a postcard picture opportunity. Visitors are also exposed to a variety of wildflowers, as well as the famous Aspen tree that is native to North America.  The Maroon Bells are also located in Colorado's White river national forest, which provides ample opportunities for camping, picnicking, and hiking nearby.

But, hikers looking to summit these peaks are in for a tough climb. While the trails are not technically difficult, many challenges are presented due to the composition of the rock. The rocks that make up the maroon bells are sedimentary, which means they are not as strong and are prone to eroding or breaking easily. These rocks also are what give the mountains their distinctive color. So, the U.S Forest Service warns climbers through a sign at the front of the park that the mountain is prone to "kill without warning," due to the fact that it contains, "loose, rotten, and unstable rocks." In 1965, eight people died on Maroon Bells during the climbing season. Since then, these mountains have earned the nickname, "Deadly Bells." So, if you are ever visiting the Maroon Bells in Colorado, remember that the beauty of this red rock comes with sacrifice.

Pikes Peak

America's Mountain

Pikes Peak, another mountain in Colorado that pushes above the clouds at over fourteen thousand feet, has earned the nickname, "America's Mountain," due to its fame as a tourist destination. Pikes Peak is an extremely famous mountain due to its location and ease of access. Pikes Peak is just outside of Colorado Springs, about a forty-five minute drive from Denver. There are also multiple ways that one can reach the summit of Pikes Peak. Visitors have the option to take shuttles to the summit, or drive along the scenic Pikes Peak highway. They can also, if they are brave and well prepared, climb to the summit of the mountain.

The Pikes Peak highway makes it extremely easy to reach the summit. There is paved road covering the entire 39 mile round trip ascent and descent, providing opportunities for anyone with a car to view the scenery at the summit. There are about 162 turns, and drivers are encouraged to stay in low gear throughout the drive. Throughout this drive, viewers pass through the foothills of the mountain, past the treeline, and then eventually into the alpine zone. Here they can view some of the most famous creatures that reside in these tough, high altitude conditions, including the famous yellow-bellied marmot.

The Pikes Peak Highway is not only an attraction for tourists. The tough drive has drawn many professional race car drivers and daredevils to attempt to summit the mountain as fast as they can. A drive that normally takes an hour for a normal tourist was done in under ten minutes by a Japanese driver in 2010. In 2013, Sebastian Loeb, a professional rally driver set the record for the Pikes Peak hill climb, reaching the summit in under nine minutes. If you ever happen to be in the Denver area, think about taking the day trip to experience the thin air at the summit of pikes peak.

Self Driving Cars: My Thoughts

Fortnight of 11/16-11/30

Self Driving Cars

My thoughts

Self driving cars, though not quite on the roads yet, seem to be the future of transportation. Automobile makers and tech giants, rideshare companies, and all kinds of other businesses are constantly scheming up new ideas and innovations for this futuristic car. Self driving cars have stirred up controversy, and will continue to bring more and more debatable issues to the table as time goes on. In this article, I will address some of these issues and provide my opinion on these topics.

Self driving cars have created a major dilemma affecting safety and human rights. In the event that a self driving car injures a pedestrian or another driver, who should be blamed? The car company or software developer? The driver? I believe that the "driver" of the car should be put at fault in a situation like this. When one gets into a car, they should understand that it is a privilege that can have negative consequences if abused. In 2015, almost 400,000 injuries took place due to distracted driving. When behind the wheel, regardless of whether the car is driving itself or not, the driver should have some level of engagement with the car and its surroundings. This way, in the event that an accident is to take place, or a tough decision needs to be made, the driver can use his or her human senses to prevent the accident or make the decision. With the powerful software found in the car, and human judgement, accidents should decline. So, if an accident were to take place, the probable cause would be a driver not paying attention to the road and relying on the car to do the work. Therefore, depending on the circumstances, a driver should take all or at least some of the blame in the event of an accident.

What about car insurance? With the future of self-driving cars so far away, this question has rarely been considered. If insurance companies mainly base rates upon a driver's record and safety one the road, how will insurance rates be determined with self driving cars? I think that insurance rates should still have some basis upon a driver's reputation, as I believe (mentioned previously) that the driver still has some responsibility when riding in the car. But, the insurance company could instead focus their rates more on the type of car and/or the routes that the car is traveling on. This will give insurance companies an idea of how often the consumer will need to file insurance claims and will allow the insurance companies to select fitting rates.

Finally, what will happen to those who enjoy cars and driving? I personally have a passion for cars, and would enjoy driving. Would there be new laws for humans interacting with the autonomous vehicles? I think that the current regulations are enough to keep order. The speed limit would be in place to prevent real drivers from taking advantage of their full control of the car. Current traffic laws would also prevent anarchy on the streets. But, as self driving cars may create new traffic patterns, more rules would have to come along to control the traffic flow and keep roads safe. Then, there is the possibility of actually driving a car becoming illegal...

Self driving cars have lots of potential. If the society manages work correctly, traffic jams could possibly be eliminated, the roads could be much safer, and automobiles could be much more environmentally friendly. But, new debates will consistently return, and the laws and society will have to quickly and continuously adapt to these changes.

The Latest in Android

Fortnight of 10/26-11/9

The Latest in Android

The debate between the two large phone operating systems and phones, Apple and Android, has been going on since the explosion of the handheld device, the cell phone. While many enjoy using Apple phones, there are many new Android phones that are popping onto the market that compete with the latest Iphones. This article will review some of the latest technology of Android, looking at design aspects and technology aspects of the phones.

Samsung Galaxy 9

The Samsung phones have constantly been matching and pushing the innovation of the new Iphones. The S9, like the popular Iphone X, has the ability to be unlocked with a face. In addition, the screen of the S9 goes from one edge all the way to the next, maximizing its size. Also, the screen resolution is default set to HD, but can be further improved to Ultra HD. When listening to music or watching a video, one is surrounded by Dolby Atmos speaker technology, providing surround sound to cover the area with high quality audio. The camera is extremely powerful, and can be set up to take shots of food, as well as record in super slow motion. Overall, this phone excels in all categories and is a good device that stays strong in many categories of comparison.

OnePlus 6

The OnePlus, a relatively new phone company, recently released their newest device, the OnePlus 6. This phone is a real whopper. It surpasses the quality of the Iphone, and comes out cheaper. The phone has a 6.3 inch display, with the ability to run videos at 4K. The processor found inside the phone is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, one of the most powerful CPU's that can be found inside a phone. Along with the Snapdragon comes the Adreno 630 graphics processing unit, allowing high end and sharp images to be viewed on-screen. Like the Iphone and the Samsung, it supports face unlock when opening the phone. The camera, while not the best, meets the camera quality of the latest Iphone. It supports many recording and photo-taking modes, beauty modes for taking selfies. In the end, the OnePlus outdoes its competitors in performance, but still has room to grow in its camera. The OnePlus 6 is an excellent option for someone interested in the fastest phone on the market.

Google Pixel 3

The Google Pixel 3, the new phone in the series of smartphones that has been recently started by Google, is at the top of the line. The Pixel 3 has an almost edge to edge screen cover, with a five and a half inch display. The phone has one of the strongest cameras of any smartphone. Its camera outdoes the latest Iphone, as well as many of its android competitors. Additionally, the Google Pixel 3 is compatible with new Google Virtual reality systems. The Google Pixel 3 has technology that allows it to learn about the user's habits to effectively charge and use battery. It can also charge wirelessly. The Pixel 3, with Google Drive, has unlimited storage for files, photos and videos. Lastly, the Pixel 3 has a custom built security chip that keeps a users passwords and files safe. Overall, the Google Pixel 3 is one of the best options for a budding photographer in interest of a good smartphone camera. Sadly, the Pixel 3 comes out on the more expensive end of the spectrum, but it still turns out cheaper than some phones created by Apple.

In conclusion, after viewing all the phones presented above, it is plain to see that all have a specialty in a specific area. These phones, in these areas, do one thing and do it exceptionally well. These phones give a user a personalized experience based on his or her needs. They also act as competition in the market of smartphones and force all companies to continue to develop new technology.

What is the best drone on the Market?

Fortnight of 10/19-10/26

Drones

Which one is the best?

In today's world, drones have come a very long way. Whether they be used for filming blockbuster movies, aiding in search and rescue missions, or providing entertainment for a consumer, drones can be found everywhere. This has created a demand for the small flying devices, and many consumers are looking for drones that will not only have the correct and necessary functions, but drones that also fit withing the buyer's preferred price range. This article will review some of the best drones, and hopefully provide enough background information to aid in the process of purchasing a drone.
Before moving onto the reviews of the drones, it is important that the most important aspects of drones are reviewed. One of the main aspects of a drone is the ability and ease of flying the drone, and how it fares in the air. This includes how fast the drone travels and whether it can remain stable while in flight. In addition to flying capability, another sought after component of drones is their portability. Drones can be tough to carry around, especially those that are large and priced astronomically high. Therefore, many buyers seek a drone that can fold or easily be carried from location to location. Lastly, one of the most important factors that influence many buyers in their drone buying process is price and practicality. The price of the drone can range from $50 to, in some cases, $30,000 and higher. Therefore, as buyers are interested in getting the best bang for their buck, price is a major interest in the aspects of a drone. Ease of operation and user interface, parts of practicality in drones also are important to new drone buyers looking for a product to meet their skills of flying drones. In the following, three drones will be evaluated from the different parts of a spectrum. The first, on one extreme of the spectrum, a drone that is pricey, but containing plenty of features. Second, a drone that is cheap, but requires some sacrifices. Lastly, a drone will be presented that meets in the middle, and falls at the center of the spectrum.

DJI Inspire 2

Before beginning, it is important to understand that this drone is mainly used in professional space. The DJI inspire 2 is priced from $3000-$6000, and is one of the best drones on the market. The DJI Inspire 2 is the second in its series and only improves on its forerunner. The DJI inspire 2 has some of the best video quality found on a drone. The image and video processing system in the DJI is able create recording at a 6K resolution, at 30 frames per second. The camera on the drone is interchangeable, enabling the buyer to choose a device that will suit him or her the best. The drone also contains obstacle avoidance systems and sensors that function in obstacle avoidance both vertically and horizontally. The drone also contains state-of-the-art stabilizing features, and a return to home function In addition to a powerful camera and built in convenience features, the Inspire 2 also has specified flight modes that are able to assist a flyer in meeting their needs. The flight modes are mainly directed at focusing on moving objects, and providing clear and accurate images for filming. Lastly, the DJI Inspire contains a powerful and long-lasting battery. The drone has a 25 minute flying time, which is top of the line for a drone. The drone can also reach speeds of up to 58 miles per hour, and accelerate from 0-50 MPH in five seconds. The battery also provides for an heating system enabling the drone to fly in cold conditions. In conclusion, this drone is definitely a great pick for someone looking to dish out a Hollywood movie. It contains the best of the best technology, but the price tag will make the eyes of many pop out.

MJX Bugs 3

The MJX Bugs 3 is one of the best budget drones for sale. The price, which ranges from $75 to about $150, is extremely competitive, and provides new buyers or budget consumers an option to a a great drone for a low price. Firstly, the MJX Bugs 3 is very user friendly. It contains features that allow almost anyone to fly. The drone contains GPS functions that give the flyer a general locations of where the drone is, a return to home function, a low battery alarm, and simple remote control. The drone also provides the ability input popular cameras such as the GoPro and Xiaomi action recorders. It has an 18 minute flight time, which for its price, is extremely good. The drone's motor is brushless, meaning it will have the ability to last very long. Unfortunately, the MJX Bugs 3 does not come with a camera, and the user will have to purchase or already own a recording device separately from the drone. To summarize, the MJX Bugs 3 is a great drone for a beginner, or someone looking for a decent budget drone.

DJI Mavic Air

The DJI Mavic air is a drone, that pricewise and featurewise meets in between the two previously mentioned drones the Mavic Air, rated number one on techradar's 2018 drone reviews, is priced at around $800. The Mavic Air probably is top of line in portability. It is a foldable drone that can fit into a jacket pocket, while not sacrificing video quality or technology. Even the remote control has the ability to fold. The Mavic Air has a powerful video processing software, recording 4K at 60 frames per second. The Mavic has a cutting edge camera, with the ability to record high quality panoramic images. The drone permits its user to pre-program flight paths to perform amazing and crowd pleasing tricks. It travels at a speed of up to 68 miles per hour, and enabling users to take the lightweight drone zooming through the skies. The Mavic, in flight, can focus on up to 16 objects at a time, and contains technology that can quickly focus in on a specific area. The Mavic also contains a strong obstacle avoidance system to make flying safe. Sadly, the flight time for the DJI Mavic Air maxes out at about 21 minutes or lower. For its price, this is not what buyers would have been hoping for. But, in summary, the Mavic Air provides an excellent middle ground for an amateur buyer looking for a recreational or powerful filming drone.

In the end, it is plain to see that depending on a user's needs and budget, the type of drone and price can vary. These three drones provided some base information about what to expect on each extreme of the the drone spectrum. It is important to remember that drones cannot be flown anywhere, due to airspace restrictions, and that even the simplest require practice to fly. But, regardless of their use, drones are very important modern day tools.
